Retired Indonesian general pleads guilty in US to aiding LTTE Tamil Tigers

A former Major General in the Indonesian Marine Corps, who was charged with money laundering and conspiring to deliver advanced weapons systems to a designated terrorist organisation, the Tamil Tigers, has pled guilty in US District Court in Maryland. He could receive a maximum of 20 years on the money laundering charges, and up to 15 years on the Conspiracy counts.

The Defendant, Erick Wotulo [UID 503685], is the most prominent individual named in the indictment. The identities of the other defendants are available by accessing Wotulo's profile on World-Check. In 2006,he was charged in US District Court in Maryland with:

  • Money Laundering.
  • Conspiracy to export arms and ammunition.
  • Conspiracy to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organisation.

The Tamil Tigers, who are officially known as the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam [UID 3219], are a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) organisation under US law, and are also designated as terrorist by the UN, UK, EU and other Western nations. They have been waging a violent military and terrorist campaign against the government of Sri Lanka, and have been seeking advanced weaponry manufactured in North America for their ongoing military operations. 

Wotulo allegedly conspired to assist them with the purchase of sophisticated firearms, machine guns, ammunition, surface-to-air missiles, night vision goggles, and other advanced weapons systems. $ 250,000 was sent to a bank account in Maryland, and there was an additional $ 452,000 payment.

He is charged with:

  • Aiding in the acquisition and proposed delivery of military technology to the Tamils.
  • Requesting price quotations.
  • Negotiating purchases.
  • Providing maritime route delivery information.
