The United States has sanctioned one former and several present government officials in Belarus who have been accused of undermining democratic processes and institutions. They allegedly violated internal electoral standards, and are guilty of human rights abuses and political repression. The EU had already imposed travel bans and asset freezes on these individuals, who now have been labeled by OFAC as Specially Designated Nationals, or SDNs.
The persons named are as follows. Please remember that slightly different spellings are also possible and in use, due to the transliteration from the Cyrillic to the Roman alphabets:
- Petr Miklashevich [UID 431603 & 265689], The Belarus Prosecutor-General.
- Yury Podobed [UID 267081], A Lieutenant-Colonel, and Commander of the Special Riot Police, or OMON.
- Aleksandr Radkov [UID 188477], Minister of Education.
- Yury Sivakov [UID 252335], the former Minister of Interior, and former Minister for Sport and Transport.
- Oleg Slizhevsky [UID 431612], the Head of Public Associations, Ministry of Justice.
- Vladimir Rusakevich [UID 188478], Minister of Information.
The individuals led the crackdown on civil society and against the democratic opposition.
