Foreign Ministers of the European Union this week reportedly approved the economic sanctions against Iran adopted by the United Nations Security Council last month. There is now a total ban on Iranian weapons exports, as well as asset freezes involving 28 individuals and organisations. The sanctions, which in large part apply to entities of the Revolutionary Guard Corps, include prohibitions on loans and financial assistance. This action was taken due to Iran's continuing defiance of United Nations resolutions calling upon it to abandon its nuclear programme.
MLROs and compliance officers in EU countries would be well advised at this time to immediately World-Check all Iranian nationals and entities with which they are currently conducting business, to ensure that they are not violating the EU directive.
