OFAC designates 30 Sudanese companies and 3 individuals
30 May 2007

As the United States moves to increase sanctions against Sudan in the United Nations for the ongoing genocide occurring in Darfur Province, its Treasury Department filed SDN designations against 30 companies alleged to contribute to the government-sponsored war crimes, as well as three major individuals accused of crimes against humanity and other grave offences.

The three individuals;

  • Ahmad Muhammed Harun [UID 297329], the Minister for Humanitarian Affiairs, but also referred to as the" Butcher of Nuba" by OFAC because of his participation in atrocities.
  • Awad Ibn Auf [UID 631109], the header of Sudanese Military Intelligence and Security.
  • Khalil Ibrahim Mohamed, also known as Khalil Taha [UID 63114], The leader of the Justice & Equality Movement, a/k/a/ JEM, which has refused to sign the Darfur Peace Agreement.

MLROs and compliance officers are urged to run the World-Check datafile against client records, as the 30 companies designated are in many diverse fields, including:

  • Petrochemical companies
  • Pharmaceutical companies
  • Agri-businesses
  • Transport and telecommunications firms

Go to World-Check for the detailed profiles.
Note: there are different ways to spell the names of the individuals, and some have aliases.

Expect some severe UN action on these designated companies quite soon, as Sudan has reportedly intentionally delayed taking action to stop the war crimes being perpetrated against its African tribal population. The US is clearly laying the groundwork for some sort of universal sanctions in the near future, so plan ahead for the day when blanket sanctions, a la Iran, are in place on a global basis.
