Fujimori extradited to Peru from Chile
23 September 2007

Former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori was flown to Lima on Saturday from Chile, where he has been fighting extradition demanded by Peru. The former Peruvian leader was returned to face charges of human rights abuses and embezzlement of public funds. Peruvian authorities will probably charge him with responsibility for murders that took place during his administration, but financial crime investigators are most interested in whether details of his rampant corruption will be publicly released. Fujimori is believed to have stolen as much as $2bn during his presidency, some of which has been reportedly located in the United States, the Cayman Islands, and Switzerland, according to the Peruvian Office of the Special Prosecutor for Corruption Offences.

World-Check shall be closely monitoring the Peruvian proceedings, as they appear to be the first instance of extradition of a former Latin American leader to face corruption charges. Is this the shape of things to come? Will corrupt PEPs finally be brought to justice in Latin America, a region that has seen massive theft by governmental leaders, who often later retire in luxury with their ill-gotten gains. Let us hope that this is but the first of many criminal proceedings against amoral and avaricious national leaders in the region.
