Additional US sanctions on Iran appear to be delayed
30 September 2007
It has been reported that the move by the United States to tighten UN sanctions against Iran has been delayed until late November. Apparently opposition to the American drive to increase United Nations sanctions by Russia and other UN members was the reason for the slowdown in the imposition of sanctions.
The bottom line is that the Islamic Republic of Iran now has some additional time in which to offer full disclosure on its nuclear programme to the United Nations agency responsible for inspections.
Compliance officers at EU banks whose clients trade with Iran, either openly, or discreetly through third countries such as Dubai, should begin to monitor the UN situation closely, beginning around 15 November, as there may not be much advance notice of fresh UN sanctions against Iran. when they are imposed.
