Expect more sanctions against Syria
13 January 2008

Aerial photography has detected new construction on the suspected covert Syrian nuclear site bombed by the Israeli Air Force last year. Is this work designed to cover up all evidence of what has been described as a joint North Korean-Syrian nuclear effort at that location? More importantly, will the United States seize upon this as sufficient grounds to increase the already-existing OFAC sanctions against Syria? Given the recent attention paid to Syria by US media, compliance officers as international banks whose clients still transact business with companies located in the Syrian Arab Republic might want to pay close attention to daily OFAC press releases, so as to be immediately aware of any new Syrian sanctions related to WMD issues,

World-Check will be closely monitoring the Syrian situation, and report to our readers forthwith, should any new sanctions be issued. Remember, OFAC has also designated PEPs involved in supporting the Iraqi insurgency, and sanctions also come from that subject regularly.
