DIFFERENT ANGLE by Kenneth Rijock
The government of Italy has issued extradition requests for 139 former South American government officials, military, police and members of intelligence services, charging all of them with kidnapping and murder of 25 Italian nationals who were slain during the so-called regional "Dirty War" against leftists during the 1970s and 1980s, known as Operation Condor. Apparently many human rights violators have been charged in their own countries, but most of the cases have never been tried. The Italian government has reportedly included several prominent former governmental leaders, both civilian and military, in this list. Will this now force the countries who have sheltered former dictators and junta leaders who are war criminals to finally bring them to justice?

Italy can try the defendants in absentia if the countries where these individuals are located refuse to extradite them, and multiple counts of murder and kidnapping could result in life sentences.
