Miami Antonini case is set for trial
17 January 2008

Antonini update: The judge presiding over the US case against the Venezuelans who tried to influence Guido Antonini Wilson to commit perjury, regarding the $800,000 in cash he attempted to smuggle into Argentina, has set the cause for trial during the two week period beginning 17 March. A Calendar Call was also scheduled for 3 March, and pre-trial motions must be filed by 14 February. Whether the case will actually go to trial then is unknown, due to several factors, such as the presence on the docket of older cases, which are generally tried first, and could exhaust the two-week time slot. In that event, the case will be bound over to the next trial calendar. Will the trial reveal how far up the governmental ladder the corrupt payments went? We cannot say, but only then will many important questions Venezuelans and Argentineans are asking about the scandal perhaps be answered.

The questions that the trial may answer:

  • What is on the audio and video recordings? Should these surveillance tapes be admitted into evidence, and played at the trial, and should Antonini testify against the defendants, the defendants may find themselves fighting a futile battle, unless they introduce new and substantial issues not yet known in this case.
  • Who in the Venezuelan and Argentinian governments will be named?
  • Will there be a superceding indictment, naming additional defendants?
  • What was the source of the money, and who was to ultimately receive it?
