Russia arrests super-criminal wanted in US
27 January 2008

Semion Mogilevich, high on the FBI Most Wanted List for Money Laundering and Racketeering, in connection with a $150m securities fraud case, has been arrested by Russian authorities on charges of tax evasion. A principal player in the Bank of New York billion dollar money laundering scandal, Mogilevich has more recently been a major figure involved in criminal influence within the Russian natural gas industry. Apparently he was arrested when shifting alliances within the Russian power structure deprived him of the unofficial protection he has enjoyed since his indictment in the United States in 2003. Don't look for him to be extradited to the US, though, as Russia has long declined to honour American requests for his extradition, a fact that has adversely affected Russo-American relations.

Semion Mogilevich [UID 9476], an influential figure in the dark world of Russian Organised Crime, first appeared in World-Check back in 2000. Readers interested in learning more about this individual are directed
to his extensive World-Check Profile.

Compliance officers at financial institutions located in South Florida kindly note that several Mogilevich associates reside in the Miami area, and any unusual attempts, by clients who are Russian nationals, to transfer large sums on Monday. 28 January, should be carefully examined. This is not profiling, but proper risk management. Though the vast majority of Russians living in the United States are law-abiding citizens,
a very small segment are hardcore Russian Organised Crime operatives.

The news of Mogilevich's arrest did not become known until late Friday, and this coming Monday would be the first time his US associates would have access to their accounts. therefore, look for any suspicious transactions. Remember, it will not just be Mogilevich gang members looking to protect his assets, but also his more unscrupulous employees, seeking to take advantage of their leader's arrest to steal for their own pockets. there is no honor amongst thieves.
