Another indicator of possible US war planning against Iran
30 January 2008
Buried in a recently-passed Defence bill is an interesting provision; an absolute prohibition on the sale of F-14 "Tomcat" fighter jet aircraft and parts. Since the Tomcat was retired by the US Navy in 2006, the Islamic Republic of Iran has been the only country flying this aircraft type. Read the text below and decide whether it is ample warning that the United States is carefully laying the groundwork for a possible future armed conflict with Iran.
SEC. 1035. PROHIBITION ON SALE OF F-14 FIGHTER AIRCRAFT AND RELATED PARTS.
Except as provided in Paragraph(2), the Department of Defense may not sell (whether directly or indirectly) any F-14 fighter aircraft, any parts unique to the F-14 fighter aircraft, or any tooling or dies used in the manufacture of such aircraft or parts, whether such sales occur through the defense Re-utilization and Marketing Service or through another agency or element of the department...
(b) PROHIBITION ON EXPORT LICENSE - No license for the export of ant F-14 fighter aircraft, any parts unique to the F-14 fighter aircraft, or any tooling or dies used in the manufacture of such aircraft may be issued by the United States Government to a non-United States person or entity.
This is certainly an effort to deny Iran access to spare parts for their F-14 fighter jets, the exact aircraft that the United States would expect to oppose it during any future armed conflict. Get the picture now? Hostilities between the US and Iran could disrupt pending letters of credit, international funds transfers, and deliveries to that country from suppliers. Compliance officers at EU countries whose clients are still doing business in Iran should ensure that senior management is fully aware of the gathering storm, from a risk management perspective.
