Alert on potential identity impersonation from Chile

Compliance officers at international banks with any substantial absentee Chilean clientele should alert their front-line staff to be extremely careful with any non face-to-face communications allegedly emanating from their customers in Chile. The personal data of 6m Chileans was obtained by a hacker, who published it on the Internet after illegally obtaining it from the electoral ministry, the education ministry, and the Chilean military database.

The information reportedly obtained:

Identity card numbers

Names and addresses

Telephone numbers and e-mail addresses

Academic background

Whilst identity theft immediately comes to mind under these circumstances, a bright financial criminal might be able to leverage the data into obtaining governmental identification, and thereafter impersonating the client via fax and telephone contact with your bank, armed with the ID he or she fraudulently obtained.
