US Supreme Court narrows scope of Money Laundering laws
3 June 2008
The United States Supreme Court has limited the broad use of money laundering laws in two decisions. In the first case, the Court held that merely hiding funds during transport is insufficient to violate the money laundering statute, "even if substantial efforts have been expanded to conceal the money." In the second case, cash payments from an illegal lottery were held to not be the "proceeds of some form of illegal activity." Money laundering, said the Court, only applies to profits.
