Defendant says Chavez was personally involved in Antonini cover-up
3 July 2008

Franklin Duran, the only defendant not to plead guilty in the Antonini case pending in US District Court in Miami, has charged that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez Frias was personally involved in the reported attempts to coerce Guido Antonini Wilson involving his future testimony about the source and destination of $790,000 found in his belongings at a Buenos Aires airport last year. Duran has also, through his counsel, alleged that evidence produced thus far in the case indicates that certain other important disclosures will occur at the trial, currently set for this Fall. Antonini is presently wanted by the authorities in Argentina on money laundering and other related charges.

Motions recently filed by Sr. Duran's attorney have alleged that he acted under duress, and that the full story is much more damaging to Venezuela than previously disclosed:

  • Henry Rangel Silva, Director of DISIP, Venezuela's Intelligence Service, had advised one of the other defendants in the case, that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez Frias was personally involved in the cover-up of the facts that the money seized in Buenos Aires came from the Chavez government, and was destined for the presidential campaign of Christina Kirschner.
  • Duran's personal safety, and that of other individuals in Venezuela, as well as his business in Venezuela, Venoco, were threatened to make him cooperate in seeking to have Antonini perjure himself as to the facts of the source and destination of the money he was couriering covertly into Argentina. He was therefore forced to act as he did.
  • The case was filed solely to embarrass the Venezuelan government, with whom the United States has poor foreign relations.
  • A Venezuelan attorney, Juan Bracamonte, allegedly said that the truth would result in a major problem for the Kirschner campaign and Venezuela's role in that campaign.
  • The cooperating witnesses, who were formerly defendants, will lie at trial about the involvement of the Venezuelan government, to obtain favourable treatment at sentencing.
  • Defendant Carlos Kauffmann will perjure himself at trial, so that he will be allowed, with his family, to remain in the United States, and avoid deportation notwithstanding his eventual felony conviction.

World-Check will continue to follow all developments in this case; Watch for them.
