Task Force looks at ways
to curtail 'Internet Terrorism'
At the end of January 2010,
the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Implementation Task
Force, together with German Federal Foreign office brought
together experts from the UN member states and its agencies
as well as regional organisations, and in addition experts
from academia and civil society to review existing and
possible further legal measures to curtail the use of the
Internet for terrorist purposes. The UN statement read
that 'the ultimate purpose is to assist Member States
by giving them a picture of the current nature of the
challenge and offer possible policy guidelines.'
Canadian court sentences Quebec-based terrorist to life
Morrocan-born Said Namouh (UID 707041) has been jailed for life by Canadian authorities and will not be eligible for parole for ten years. Namouh was found guily in October 2009, on four terrorism related charges pertaining to an alleged plot to attack targets in Austria and Germany. He was associated with the Global Islamic Media Front (GIMF). The judge in sentencing him remarked "He remains dangerous ...He has to be removed from society.
... We don't know when, if ever, he will cease to be dangerous."
Yemen president states that terrorism is costing the country lost revenue
Yemen President Mujawar has recently spoken about the terrorist and sabotage acts of the al-Houthi rebellion in the northern governorate of Sa'ada and the separatist elements in some southern governorates, stating that the country has lost opportunities in particular in the investment and tourism sectors. He once again spoke of government's efforts to continue to combat terror, and revealed a comprehensive system which Yemen has put in place to eliminate terror including the ratification of legislation to combat money laundry and terror financing.
European Parliament rejects EU-US data-sharing agreement
A clear majority of MEPs at the European Parliament voted against the interim agreement between the United States and the European Union on US access to the financial data of European citizens managed by the Belgian firm SWIFT. The European Commission and the EU Council will have now have to renegotiate an agreement considered “bad” for personal data protection.
Suspected terrorist pleads guilty in New York court
Najibullah Zazi (UID 1139869) has pleaded guilty to three terrorism charges in a Federal Court in New York. He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to detonate bombs in the subway, conspiracy to commit murder and to provide material support to terrorism. He was arrested in September 2009 and has reportedly been cooperating with the federal government. He said he was recruited by al Qaeda in Pakistan when he traveled there intending to join the Taliban.
